How to Create the Perfect College Morning Routine

Creating a productive college morning routine isn’t as complicated as you might think!

Whether you realize it or not, you already have a morning routine – but it could probably use some tweaking.

Your morning routine plays a big role in how you start your day so it’s best to develop a good routine now!

A good tip would be to try waking up earlier so you can get more done. It may sound daunting at first, but it’s essential to have a good college morning routine.

Why you should wake up early in College

Waking up early can seem daunting to most, but it’s actually not that bad if you get enough sleep.

You should try to wake up earlier to have the most productive morning routine possible (and thus a productive day!)

Waking up early in college can help you be very productive because you get an early start to the day to finish up on some assignments before class.

You can also use this time to head to the gym before class and get a good workout!

If you need some tips on how to start waking up early (and not be miserable) make sure you read my post on How to Wake Up Early in College (And Stay Up!)

The Perfect College Morning Routine:

*Plan the night before

This isn’t exactly part of your morning routine but it’ll help things go a lot smoother if you do it.

Sure, you can wake up early to get things like picking out your outfit out of the way, but it’s better to be productive during this time.

Here are some things you can do the night before to make your mornings easier:

  1. Lay out your outfit
  2. Plan your breakfast
  3. Set your alarm
  4. Pack your backpack for class

Get up early

Rather than waking up just in time to get ready to leave for class, wake up a few hours earlier so you can be productive.

Rushing out of your dorm room on mornings is a bad habit that leads to other bad habits. For example, waking up late can cause you to miss out on breakfast, or opt-in for fast foods or unhealthy foods to save time. (Popular way to gain the freshman 15, by the way!)

Depending on how early you wake up, you could even finish up an assignment before class, or review one that’s due so it can be fresh on your mind in case there’s a discussion. You can also study for quizzes and exams before class too if you give yourself some extra time in the morning.

Meditate

Healthline highlights some of the most important benefits of meditation including:

  1. Stress and anxiety relief
  2. Enhanced self-awareness
  3. Lengthens attention span

All of these benefits are super important for college students!

Meditating is a great way to start your day but not a lot of college students have this in their morning routine. (I actually started after I graduated, and it’s definitely a habit now).

It’s not as hard as you think it is and you can do it anywhere you feel comfortable.

Journal for about 5-10 minutes

Journaling is a great way to capture any important thoughts or goals you thought of while meditating.

Get a cute journal, like this one, and simply write your thoughts down every morning. Here are a few prompts to help you get started:

  • What are you grateful for?
  • What do you hope to accomplish today, this week, or this semester?
  • How have you been feeling lately?

These are just some examples. You can actually write anything you want in your journal.

Personally, I write about all these prompts and I also journal when I feel inspired to do something.

Listen to a podcast and have breakfast

Pair the most important meal of the day with your favorite podcast!

Podcasts are a great way to either receive a morning message, learn something new, or get inspired. There are lots of podcasts on different topics like productivity, motivation, blogging, faith, and more!

You can also listen to them on the go if you didn’t finish it at breakfast. You can listen to podcasts on your way to class, in between classes, and after class!

Make a to-do list

Make a list of important things you need to get done today.

The key to this tip is to prioritize your tasks according to importance and deadlines.

Don’t just write down a bunch of stuff that’s not time sensitive. This can make you feel overwhelmed and might even make you avoid getting anything done because you feel like it’s too much.

Be productive

Get a head start on your assignments or start studying for that test that’s coming up.

If you’re one of those students who are more productive in the library, head on campus earlier to get things done before class.

Don’t just wake up and get ready for class, try to get as much work in as possible to make the best use of your time.

Get ready

If you decided not to leave your dorm room to get some work done then now’s the time to get ready to head out!

Your bag’s packed, your clothes are already laid out, you’re full, relaxed, and ready to head to class!
